EP 52 – Creating a Ton of SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT with Limited Time/Budget

Hey hey! It’s Friday, and you know what that means — time for Friday Bullpen Sessions!

Every day I talk to business professionals who are stumped by social media. They know it’s important, they know it’s the way to grow your business and build awareness around your brand now in 2020, but they don’t know where to start. Meanwhile, online entrepreneurship giants like Gary Vanyeurchuk seem to be effortlessly creating tons of fantastic content. Next to guys like him, creating a strong, social media presence online seems like a daunting task.

But here’s the thing: It doesn’t have to be. Building awareness around your personal brand doesn’t have to be painful or difficult, and you can start right now!

Step #1: Stop comparing yourself to other people. I say it all the time — Do not compare your Chapter One to someone else’s Chapter Ten. Gary Vaynerchuk has been doing this a while, and you’re just starting out — and that’s okay! Give yourself permission to take some risks and figure this thing out. You’ll be up there with the big guys in no time.

Step #2: Follow the three strategies I’m about to lay out for you in this episode. You all may remember that last week, for my 50th episode, I considered doing a podcast about how you can create 50 pieces of social media in just one week, but I decided to save that episode. I’m doing it today instead! I won’t be talking about how to create 50 pieces of content specifically, but I AM sharing my top three strategies to help you maximize your content to easily create 20, 30, or more posts every single week. Ready? Let’s get started!

Social Media Strategy #1: Use Multiple Platforms and Media

I want you to do something right now. Take out your iPhone or your Android and record a video of yourself for 90 seconds or two minutes. You can teach something or share a tip or a strategy — whatever you want to do!

Okay, now you have one piece of content, and it only took a couple of minutes. Now, post that video to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, and if it’s under two minutes, post it to Twitter. Now you’ve got four pieces of content. You’ve already quadrupled your content output, and we’re just getting started!

You can very quickly multiply the amount of social media content you have just by using three or four platforms because different people use those different platforms to see your content. But what if you switched up the medium too?

Let me explain — go back to that original two-minute video. Upload it to your computer, and find a website like this one where you can convert an .mp4 file to an .mp3. To clarify — a video is an .mp4 file, and this website gives you an .mp3 file, which is just the audio from your video. Now you have a new piece of content — it’s the same message but in a new medium. Now, post that to all four platforms, and you’re up to eight pieces of content, and we’re not done yet!

Go back to that same video, but this time, listen to it yourself through your headphones and type out your message. Now you have an article or blog post. Post that to your four platforms — LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Now you’re up to 12 pieces of content, and the whole thing took just a few minutes.

What if you did that three or four times a week? If you could make three two-minute videos a week and repurpose them in all the ways we’ve talked about, you’d have 36 pieces of social media content, and it would take maybe 20 minutes. See? It’s not so difficult after all!

Social Media Strategy #2: The Five Categories of Social Media Content

Okay, we’ve talked about repurposing one piece of content into several, but if you want to keep expanding your brand voice and varying the types of content you produce, you need to think about creating for five different categories. (And by the way, I can’t totally take credit for this strategy — It’s one I learned from my own coaches and colleagues, but it’s too good not to share with you today!)

#1: Personal Stories

Here’s the bottom line: You have to get comfortable sharing personal stories on social media. I’ve said it over and over — Selling is about who knows you, likes you, and trusts you. When you share personal stories on your social media, you give your audience the opportunity to connect with you. And when your audience knows you and likes you, selling is a hell of a lot easier.

So ask yourself — what personal stories can I share? What valuable lessons have you learned that your audience could benefit from? Don’t be afraid to share them on social media, and trust that the right people will connect with you and your stories.

#2: Pure Value

This category is all about education. You can post a video, audio file, or blog post in which you’re purely teaching. You can share a helpful tip or strategy that you’ve found useful. The “three-step” formula is excellent here. You can share the “Top Three XYZ” or the “Three Best Ways to ________.” Give your audience some quick, practical advice to help them grow their businesses.

#3: Credibility

I like to call this category the “credibility corner.” Have you won any awards? Have you been nominated for anything? Have you written a book or been featured in a magazine or on someone else’s podcast? This is your space to show your credibility. Anything that demonstrates that you are an authority is something you want your audience and potential clients to know about! So make sure to share those credentials on social media.

#4: Testimonials

This category is similar to the previous one, but instead of sharing your street credibility from external sources, you’re sharing directly from your clients. Take this opportunity to show off a little. Share case studies of how people who have worked with you have gone from failing to succeeding and how you helped them get there.

I do this all the time! When I’m coaching, I often take pictures. I want to have photos of the coaching happening as it’s happening. Then later, I share those pictures with some positive reviews from my satisfied clients. All you’re doing here is proving to your audience that you are an authority in your field and demonstrating to them your ability to transform lives and careers.

#5: Calls to Action

This is the toughest category and often the scariest. People are afraid to take that next step and ask their audience to invest in their services. I get it — it’s tough to ask people to trust you enough to invest their time and money on you. Not every post needs to be a call to action, but those posts really do help you generate business.

So don’t be afraid! Ask your audience to schedule a call with you. Ask them to enroll in your upcoming webinar. Encourage them to sign up for your email or text community. Whatever it is, call your audience to take action and invest in some aspect of your business.

Social Media Strategy #3: Schedule Your Content

This final social media strategy is the simplest and the biggest time-saver and money-saver of them all. Here it is: Find a platform that allows you to schedule your social media content. Maybe you have a team of people who can manage your social media accounts, and that’s great. But if you’re in a place where you need to save money, you can find a whole variety of online platforms that allow you to schedule your posts all at once, so you don’t have to worry about them throughout the week.

I recently transitioned to using a platform called Social BU when my previous social media manager, Amanda, had to leave my business. It only costs $8 a month, and it allows me to schedule all my posts across all four of my platforms at the same time. If you’re limited on time and budget, and you don’t have the money to hire people to manage your social media, find a platform that you can use to schedule your social media posts. It’s easy, inexpensive, and time-efficient — a win-win-win!

Grow Your Online Presence to Grow Your Business

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you do not have an online presence today in 2020, you are irrelevant. There’s no other way around it. The online space today is all about grabbing attention. If you have a strong and consistent voice on social media, your clients will be much more likely to say “yes” the next time you talk to them.

So as you’re creating content and building your brand voice, try out these three strategies. And make sure you share this post on Instagram, tag me, @andy_neary, and let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear from you about what worked best and how your business grew.

You can also join my FREE text community! Just text the word “Mindset” to 414-622-1462, and I’ll give you access to a TON of free weekly coaching. Until next time — keep hustling, keep showing up with your authentic voice on social media, and keep trusting that your clients are coming to you.

I’ll catch you later!

EP 50 – The 3 Words that will CHANGE YOUR CAREER FOREVER!

Hey hey! Welcome back! It’s Friday, and you know what that means — it’s time for The Bullpen Sessions. And this is an extra exciting episode because it’s my 50th. That’s right, the big 5-0! I’m so grateful to have had 50 opportunities to share my best business advice with you guys.

I thought a lot about the topic for this milestone episode. I thought about discussing ways to create 50 pieces of social media content in one week (to go along with the 50 theme, of course), but I think I’ll save that for another time. Instead, I’m bringing you the three tiny, little words that completely changed my career forever.

These three short words are the best business advice I’ve ever received. They turned my career upside down and back again and changed everything about the way I do business. And they can change your career too. Are you ready? Do you want to find out the three words that will shift your career, your mindset, and your whole life? Are you sure? Okay, here they are:

I don’t know. That’s it — “I don’t know.”

What?! Really? All that build-up and excitement, and the three words are, “I don’t know”?! I hear you — I thought the same thing when the leaders of a Mastermind I attended shared those words with me. But there’s a little more explanation to it than that. Let’s dive in and see how “I don’t know” can reshape your career for the better.

Sometimes, We Just Can’t Predict the Results

Let me give you a little more explanation. A few years ago, I signed up for a class on social media. I knew that to grow my business, I needed to improve my social media presence and learn how to use different platforms as marketing tools. I figured that taking a class on the subject was an excellent way to do that.

I remember that this particular class required me to travel, so in addition to investing in the class itself, I spent money on travel expenses to attend a one-day Mastermind with two influential and respected thought leaders in the marketing industry. These two people are considered experts in the field, and they were going to take us to the next level by teaching us to be effective on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and any other platform. I was excited to work with these leaders in the industry — I knew that learning from their expertise would be an enormous benefit to me.

While I was at this Mastermind, I quickly noticed that all of us who were participating had been asking one central question: What results were we going to get?

We wanted to know exactly how much value we could get out of effective social media marketing strategies — whether in terms of dollars or clients or any other metric. We had paid to attend this Mastermind and participate in this class because we trusted that the experts leading us would teach us exactly what we needed to do to get a specific result. We wanted a formula, an easy correlation between social media posts and business growth.

So you can imagine our shock when the best advice they had for us was, “I don’t know.” We had paid money to hear from industry-leading experts, and they “didn’t know?!” But here’s the truth: That was the best advice they could have given us.

The bottom line is: It’s impossible to predict the results. I mean, sure, there are measurements that show that higher engagement on social media leads to more clients or more business, but the truth is that there’s no way to know for sure what kinds of posts or what frequency of posts are going to maximize your business. When it comes to marketing, you just can’t completely predict the results. There’s always going to be a certain amount of guesswork.

But don’t worry, that’s good news!

The Freedom of “I Don’t Know”

“Andy, really? What are you talking about?” I know, I know, it sounds weird. How could guesswork and uncertainty be a good thing for your business?

Answer: Because it gives you the freedom to experiment.

In particular, when it comes to social media marketing, we just don’t know exactly what works and what doesn’t. So, instead of following a formula that says, “If you create X amount of posts, you’ll get X amount of clients,” you get to be creative. You have to experiment.

For example, maybe you have an idea for an infographic you want to share on Instagram, you have to test it. Put it out there, and see how your audience responds. If it works, and you get a positive response or new followers or more business — great! Now you’ve learned that fun, interesting infographics resonate with your audience. If it doesn’t work — you’ve learned that you need to tweak your posts a little. You have the opportunity to fine-tune your marketing strategy and keep experimenting until you figure out what resonates with your target audience.

Admitting when you don’t know something gives you the freedom to play. It gives you room to test out different ideas, strategies, tools, and tactics that you haven’t tried before. They may work, they may not, and either way, you’ve learned something.

And this applies to more than just marketing. This principle will work in every area of your business, too. If you have an idea for a new product, try it! I don’t know if it will work, but it’s worth a try. If you have an idea for a website redesign — go ahead and experiment. Maybe you want to start a podcast or video series. You might not know if it will immediately result in an abundance of new clients, but that’s exactly why you should test it out.

I centered this episode around the three words “I don’t know,” but “always be testing” would work just as well. Always be testing your new ideas in your business until you figure out what works best for you and your audience. The strategies and products that work for your business might not work for someone else, and they might not work according to some formula. But if they work, they work, and they’ll probably work again and again. Don’t be afraid to try out new ideas — even when you can’t guarantee the result. Eventually, you’ll get the results you want, and you’ll learn a ton from the process of testing along the way.

Don’t Be Afraid to Take Messy Action

When you’re starting a new business, it’s easy and often tempting to make excuses. “I don’t have the money right now.” “I don’t have enough time.” Do those sound familiar? I get it — it can be scary to invest time and money into something that might not work. But here’s the bottom line: Without action, you get nowhere.

It’s going to be messy, but taking action without any certainty of the outcome is the best advice your business career needs right now. If you’re trying to build and grow a business, the most important thing you can do is take any action at all. Don’t wait behind easy excuses. When you do that, you sit still and never improve anything. But when you take action — even messy action — you give yourself the chance to learn, grow, and create new opportunities for yourself.

That’s why you have to start taking action, and you have to do it today. Please hear my urgency about this — you must start taking messy action right now. And don’t be afraid of it! Even if you try out an idea and it doesn’t work, at least you tried, and you’ll know what not to do next time. That’s already an improvement in your business strategy! And if it does work, you’ll start seeing the results you want faster than you can imagine.

You’ll never get anywhere if you don’t take messy action. You will sit still, and your business will stay at the same level. If you want to see growth, you have to do something, anything. You might have to change your strategy or style — you might have to tweak, adapt, or pivot. That’s okay! Tweaks don’t indicate failure. Neither do pivots. But you are never going to get anywhere if you don’t take action.

What Messy Action Will You Take Today?

What idea have you been thinking about for a long time that you haven’t followed through on yet? What actions have you been considering?

Let this episode be the inspiration you need to take messy action. Test out your ideas! You’ll either get the result you want to see or learn a valuable lesson. Either way, your action was not wasted.

Don’t waste any more time without taking action. Please hear my urgency — take action today. Invest in that coaching program. Launch your new podcast. Post your new content to Instagram. Whatever you’ve been trying to work up the courage to do — you have my permission to test it right now. Give it a try — you’ll be glad you did.

I hope this episode inspired you today! I hope it pushed you to take a risk and try something new in your business. If it did, I hope you’ll share it on Instagram! Take a screenshot, share your biggest takeaway from the episode, and tag me, @andy_neary. And if you would be so kind, please leave me a good review over on Apple Podcasts. Every review helps new listeners find this show!

If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and join the Complete Game Mastermind, this text community is a great way to see if my coaching might be right for you.

Thanks for joining me on my 50th episode today, guys! I hope you got something valuable out of it. Until next time — take messy action! You never know what incredible results you could receive.

EP 48 – The Benefits of Seeing the OPPORTUNITY In Every CHALLENGE

Hey, hey! It’s Friday, and you know what that means — time for Friday Bullpen Sessions!

Let’s face it: 2020 has thrown us more than a few curveballs. We’ve had a pandemic, hurricanes, wildfires, a polarized election — it has been one crazy year, and many of us have experienced major setbacks. Thousands of people’s careers have been turned totally upside down, and many of us are struggling to regroup.

Whatever setbacks you’ve experienced as a result of this insane year, what is your attitude about the few months we have left in 2020? As I write this post, it’s August 21st. That means there are just over four months left until the end of the year. Do you view these next four months as one big, fat challenge? Or do you see them as an opportunity to do something great? Are you thinking pessimistically or optimistically?

That’s what I want to talk about today. You see, I believe that you cannot get to where you want to go unless you have the right perspective on what the end of the year is going to look like. The right perspective will help you use these last four months to turn this year around and truly succeed in your business.

If you’re interested in talking directly to me about this, please feel free to reach out! Send me a DM on Instagram or schedule a call with me on my website. I would love to connect with you and help you discover how you can turn this year around and make it your most successful year yet.

But right now, we’re talking about opportunities and challenges. I want to give you a little bit of wisdom to help you shift your perspective and start seeing the incredible potential of the next four months. Yes, 2020 has been a hard year so far, but you still have time to start something new, rebuild, and turn these last few months into the beginning of something great. So with that, let’s get started!

The Colorado Wildfires

I wanted to start today with a little story about something that happened recently. Just last weekend, a couple of my friends and I went out on what I might call a little man-cave session. We had planned to head over to a beautiful area of Colorado called Glenwood Springs to play a little golf and spend some time hanging out. But as we were preparing to embark on our trip, we started realizing, “Hey, this may be difficult.”

I don’t know if you’ve seen this on the news, but we’ve been having some massive wildfires here in Colorado. We’ve had four major wildfires, all burning at the same time. And one of those fires started early last week in the Glenwood Canyon area — right near where we’d planned to go.

Nevertheless, we were able to go on our little trip, we had a good time, and after spending our last night in Aspen, we set out to make the drive back home to Fort Collins. Now, I knew that there had been massive wildfires relatively nearby, but what I didn’t know was that the fourth wildfire had kicked up over the weekend and was quickly growing out of control.

As we were driving home, we started seeing major smoke coming up as we started coming down the Hoosier Pass, and we realized, “That’s way too close.” That’s when I grabbed my iPhone, did a quick Google search, and learned about the new fire.

Four wildfires covering many thousands of acres is a huge deal. So many people in the state of Colorado have been forced to evacuate their homes, and a ton of land is just being absolutely devastated right now. It’s a dangerous situation, and in this particularly dry season where we haven’t had rain for a long time, it can start to feel a little hopeless.

Rise Like a Phoenix

As my buddies and I were driving home this weekend and watching that enormous plume of smoke go up over our beautiful state of Colorado, I can tell you we weren’t feeling good. So much of Colorado has been devastated by these wildfires this year — another massive fire was the last thing we needed.

At that point, I texted Amy and said, “Man, I thought that was the Cameron Pass, but this is actually another fire.” But then, she said something that surprised me and brought a little smile to my face. She replied, “All this means is that we, Colorado, are going to rise out of these ashes like a phoenix.”

Have you ever heard of a phoenix? A phoenix is a mythical bird that grows up, eventually grows old, bursts into flames, and then is reborn out of its own ashes. Phoenixes are constantly dying and being reborn in this cycle that repeats over and over. They’re amazing because even though they seem to experience these dramatic, fiery deaths, they’re always reborn out of the ashes.

Colorado may be up in flames right now, and there may be ashes everywhere. But as my girlfriend, Amy, said, we’ll rise from those ashes. We’ll just have to be reborn. We’ll start over, rebuild, and be even better and stronger than we were before, just like a Phoenix.

I didn’t expect Amy’s response, but it definitely put a smile on my face, and here’s why: I think she has the right perspective. Instead of despairing about the fate of Colorado and feeling anxious and sad and hopeless about the wildfires, Amy is refusing to give up. She knows that we’ll rise again and be reborn out of the ashes. It may take time, but we’ll get there eventually.

Are You Using This Opportunity to Rise Like a Phoenix?

Do you see where I’m going with this? 2020 has left most of us in the ashes. We’ve experienced so many hardships and setbacks that it can be hard to imagine how we’re ever going to get out of this fire. But just like a phoenix, we can be reborn. We can start over and create new lives for ourselves.

I want you to take just a minute to evaluate yourself. Have you been spending your time thinking pessimistically? Are you complaining that the pandemic or the wildfires or any of the other crazy circumstances we’ve been in this year have destroyed your momentum? Are you blaming and shaming COVID-19 or the economy or whatever else for your lack of success this year? Or are you using this as an opportunity to start the rest of your life?

We have a unique opportunity right now. Yes, in 2020, many of us have lost some momentum in our careers. But now, we have time to reevaluate some things. Ask yourself some questions: Am I happy in my job? What kind of job would I like to have? Is it time to start my own business?

And think about who you’re hanging around. Are you spending your time with people who are lifting you up? Or are the people in your circle dragging you down? And what are your hobbies? What do you love about life? What are you enjoying? What could be better?

You have an incredible chance right now to start making changes and creating your dream life. If you’ve lost your job, maybe now’s the time to reinvent your career. If you’re finding yourself with more alone-time than ever before, maybe it’s time to pick up that new hobby you’ve wanted to try or to turn your old favorite hobby into a side hustle or business. The opportunities are literally endless.

But it all starts with your perspective. If you believe that 2020 is the end of all your success, it will be. But if you believe that 2020 is an opportunity to take notice of the things that could be better in your life and start making some changes to achieve greater success, it will be that too.

Choose to rise from the ashes, just like a phoenix. Don’t sit in the dust of whatever 2020 has destroyed for you. Choose to see this as an opportunity. Use these next four months to build something new and incredible that’s going to bring you success, happiness, and fulfillment for years to come.

You Control Your Perspective

It’s true — there’s a lot of bullshit in the world right now. It’s all over the news — the pandemic, the economy, the election, the wildfires — it’s a lot to deal with, and it’s easy to feel like we can’t control anything. But here’s what you can control: your perspective.

You have a choice right now: You can continue to view this year as a big, fat challenge and drag yourself through these last four months, or you can choose to see this year as an opportunity to make massive changes and start living your dream life. You can rise from the ashes just like a phoenix — it’s all about your perspective.
